Skinfood (NZ) Mud Masque

Where I got it: I bought this on Skinfood.co.nz for $13.99 and free shipping. I have seen so many rave and reviews of this mud masque and I have finally jumped on the bandwagon. Initially I have always thought this is just a very ordinary mud mask that drys up on the skin. Oil from the pores escapes through thus the dots of oily on the dried mask. So what’s the big deal about this mask that its always sold out in supermarkets? I’ve tried Countdown, Pak n Save, Farmers, online, etc. It’s always sold out!

What I got: This is a tube of Skinfood (New Zealand) Mud Masque. Contains: Rotorua Mud, Jojoba Oil, Apricot Oil, Sunflower Oil, Spirulina, Kelp Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract,Lavender Oil, Sweet Orange Oil. A very much talked-about mud masque for people with combination, oily and acne or blemish prone skin. It claims to draw out impurities and oils from pores.

How I find it: The first time I used it, it stung my eyes slightly and made it water like crazy! It turns out that happens to many people but the results are so effective people didn’t care. After cleansing and drying my face, I squeeze a good amount onto my palms and apply the mask with my fingertips. The instructions recommend a good thick even layer. The texture is a very smooth cream almost gel like. Smells pleasant and goes on the skin smoothly. After I’ve got my face all covered (avoiding eye area), it started to sting my eyes a little and started to water. At first I wiped it off thinking it would stop watering, but it didn’t stop and it was stinging as well until the mask was about 80% dry. The mask turned from a medium brown/grey to a light ash grey colour when it fully dried. Didn’t take long as well. Washing off was easy with just water or you could use a cloth to help.

Overall: I like how the mask dried down to a thin layer instead of a thick, crackly layer that when you move your face, it will crumble and fall apart. While it was drying up, the mask pulled out sebum (oil) from my pores and after washing my blackheads has reduced (not totally gone). For me, I usually need a few applications and ongoing maintenance to see great results. I believe this mask can help reduce my blackheads and clean my pores (not fully deep clean). I plan to use this about 3 times a week along with my new Paula’s Choice Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment and if I have a BHA product, that would be great too! The BHA product would clean out all the gunk in my pores and the retinol treatment would greatly improve my pore size so no new blackheads will form (fingers crossed)! Overall, this mask is really a great product to have in my skincare routine. Best of all, it’s really affordable!
