CurrentBody Skin x Wayne Goss – LED Light Therapy Mask

Where I got it

Alright, so I have heard of LED light therapy for a few years now and have seen cheap knock-offs out in the market which are basically useless (remember Neutrogena?), I also tried something from the mid-range level, but they are bulky and heavy, so I hated using it. Then you have the $700 Dr Dennis Gross LED masks which seems to be quite over my budget at that time and I thought I would be paying for the brand at that price and I wasn’t willing to do that.

Fast-forward to earlier this year, I have been seeing fellow skincare influencers out there trying out these at-home LED masks and giving real and honest reviews about them. A brand that keeps on popping up was CurrentBody Skin and what draws my interest the most is that it is a flexible LED mask piece instead of a hard, plastic mask. The reviews are realistic and good, mostly of it’s anti-ageing and recovery benefits of the LED mask. I knew that RED light provides anti-aging and recovery benefits and BLUE light helps with acne and breakouts. These are the main 2 colours. The CurrentBody LED mask only provides red LED, but the DDG provides red and blue at the same time.

So I was umming and ahhing about getting this one as it was also around NZD$600 and I’m just not prepared to splurge that much on something I might not commit to using. Wayne Goss then had a partnership with CurrentBody and put together a very good bundle with this LED mask along with a bunch of skincare products and tools for £279, I was really excited! It still took me about 3 months to finally take the plunge and purchase the damn thing. The limited edition set is worth £430 and the mask itself is usually £349! So the Wayne Goss bundle came down to NZD$579 with free shipping to New Zealand. I ordered this on 23/7, and it arrived on 10/8.

How I find it

First of all, the large black box comes in a really beat up cardboard box, but the contents inside were in good condition. Maybe the cleanser leaked a little, so there were a little clear, watery liquid everywhere. However, it did not damage anything inside. Let’s get into the items inside. The LED mask is safely placed into a separate box along with instruction booklets, charger, adaptors, a Velcro head strap and two eye shields. This limited edition set includes a bunch of skincare and tools from the brand. Honestly, I’m not too excited about skincare products because I have hardly heard about their products. I wasn’t particularly excited about the eyebrow tools as well, but all these items were included for use an extra £20!

I think I will talk about the LED Light Therapy Mask first because that is more interesting. If you are interested in the products, please see further below.

The mask is of a flexible silicone material. It has holes for the eyes, two strips for the nose which has LED lights behind, an opening for the mouth and then there are openings for the ears and a slot for the Velcro headband to go through and wrap around the face. There is a cord from the mask that connects to a rechargeable battery that has a single button. First thing you need to do after opening this box is charge the battery with the wall plug. Once you turn that on, 3 lights started to flash letting you know that it is charging. Once it is all charged, the lights stay on without flashing.

So when the battery is fully charged (about 6 hours), it can be used for 20 treatments and you don’t need to be fixed to the wall. You simply plug the mask into the portable battery and then press and hold the button for about 2 seconds and the mask will turn on.

Before I put on the mask, I cleanse and exfoliate my skin. Do not put any skincare on as it can stop the device to work properly. The only thing they recommend to use is their Hydrogel mask with the LED mask (which I never did). Once my skin is clean and dry, I put the LED mask on and secure it behind my head with the Velcro band. Then I turn the device on and either relax or do something else. The mask turns itself off after 10 minutes so I don’t need to put a timer on.

Mask with the eye protectors

After the timer is up, simply remove the device, apply skincare as usual and use SPF during the day. I clean the LED side with a simple alcohol-free wet wipe every time I use it. Then I just put it back into the fabric travel bag. It is recommended to use this for 5 days a week for at least 4 weeks to see results. I personally have been using this for the full 4-weeks.

Alright, so update on this after a full 4 weeks and I have been a good girl using this for at least 5 days a week, sometimes even 6 days a week. I got more and more comfortable with manoeuvring with the mask – slipping it on and adjusting the straps at the back of my head and the mask does not slip down. Also releasing the straps at the back and just slipping it out of my head. In the end, I preferred the mask without the black silicone eye rim thingy, which was just a personal preference. The mask was close enough on my face that the LED lights were not affecting my eyeballs, and the black rims were just slightly bulky.

I can see improvements in redness on my skin, mainly on my cheeks and around my chin area, but I have yet to see any improvements in skin texture or skin firmness. Personally I have acne scarring textural problems which I think only invasive procedures can make a difference (i.e. micro needling or laser), but I also don’t have a lot of concern about major firmness issues or volume loss, so I cannot really tell. But as a preventative measure, I think this LED mask would help with keeping that premature ageing at bay. But overall, the frequency of getting those blind, under the skin pimples have significantly reduced and I am very happy with that. These large, painful pimples are really annoying and they can make my skin really bumpy and red. The LED mask brings the inflammation down and reduces the size with 2-3 uses.

The Daily Foaming Cleanser is a foaming second cleanser, meaning that this will not remove your makeup and long-wearing sunscreen. I used this after my oil cleanser or balm cleanser to remove all my makeup and sunscreen, then 3-4 pumps of this cleanser and just massage all over my face. The product is in a liquid form inside the bottle and when pumped out, it turns into a light foam. Therefore I can confirm that this was the leaking culprit inside the packaging but it did not damage anything. The foam is not really dense, but dense enough as a cleanser. The cleanser feels quite nice and there is a light scent to it, but washes off easily. I decided to go quite generous on this because I always I prefer heaps of foam over just a little bit that would quickly turn into rubbing water all over my face.

After cleansing, my skin feels nice and clean, not overly drying to my surprise. Usually foaming cleansers can be quite drying on the skin, but this wasn’t the case. At least for me it wasn’t. Then I would use the Daily AHA Tonic on a cotton pad and just wipe it over my skin. This is recommended to be used once a day and can be used day OR night and you need to use and SPF during the day (min SPF30 IMO). The tonic wasn’t irritating to my skin, but I do have quite resilient skin and my tolerance for something like a daily AHA toner is quite good. I won’t use this on a daily basis though because I don’t think my skin needs it, but I will use this maybe twice a week and that would work great. It is colourless and has a light artificial floral fragrance. Not irritating to the nose, and no sensitivity issues as well for me.

Next up, the Hyaluronic Acid Serum. When I see it in a clear glass bottle, and how thick it was, I was on the fence a little. Sometimes thick, gel-like serums can be sticky or hard to spread or even worse does not mix well with whatever you put on top of it. This serum is indeed quite thick from the dropper and you really do need to wait for the serum to settle down before applying anything else. Also you need to make sure you don’t overuse this. Otherwise, this is a decent hyaluronic acid serum for hydration.

Let’s talk about the Clarifying Clay Mask. I love a good clarifying mask and they are often clay-based which is not a big concern of mine. If you have dry skin, you should try to avoid using a clay-based clarifying mask too often as it can dry your skin out. Personally, I have slightly dehydrated skin, but I also have congestion so I would use a clay mask only when I feel like my skin needs a bit of emergency help. This clay mask looks rather red, but when I smooth it onto my skin (smooth texture btw, very easy to spread), it looked like I put foundation on! Maybe a tad too red, but it looked really smooth and thin, not that thick gloopy mud mask texture.

Current Body Skin Clarifying Clay Mask

The mask starts to dry up within maybe 2 minutes, so by the time I finished covering my face, it started to dry from the edges. You can definitely multi-mask with this product and just apply to where you need it to avoid drying out your entire face. In about 7 minutes, the mask is alreayd about 70% dry which you can easily tell because it turns lighter in colour and you can see it starts cracking and the oils from my pores starts seeping out.  People say these clay masks draw out “gunk” from the pores, but I would say that is just your pores producing sebum and that is showing through the dried clay.

Once the mask is dried, I went to get it washed off immediately. I splashed some water to my face to loosen the dried mask and just massage with my fingers. Then I just run my face under warm running water and just rub everything off. My skin feels clean and soft after washing off and I just applied skincare on my face as per normal. I’m not sure when it started happening, but after about 4 hours or so, I touched my face – mainly the chin and nose area and noticed that my skin was really gritty, almost like my blackheads or sebaceous filaments are popping up from my pores and they are standing up! I was scratching it which I shouldn’t be doing, but I can tell it was because of the clay mask drying my skin out and drawing the impurities, blackheads, keratin, etc. out from my pores and it did not rinse off from my face. Sounds yuck right, but you can’t actually see it.

It is not a bad thing what the mask has done, but I think next time when I use this mask again, I will either use a cloth to help remove the mask as well as help remove any of the impurities that have popped up. Otherwise I would one of those skin spatulas to further help to remove that stuff. While this mask sounds pretty amazing, I would say that most drying clay masks or mud masks would do something similar, but I wouldn’t recommend using these often as you can see how drying it was, it was probably sucking up all the oils and hydration from the surface of my face for all that stuff to come out like that.  It would also be nice to do a soothing or hydrating mask after the clay mask next time.

Overall

Overall, I am still enjoying using the LED mask. I think 10 minutes every day surely is something that I can do without a problem. It is different from spending 10 minutes on a mask I need to ultimately wash off which I can be a little lazy to do. I would really prefer to have a strap over the top of my head so that the mask fit better around my chin area. I am quite happy with how it helps with my breakout inflammation and bringing that down. Also the redness associated with it. However, I would need to keep using it to see benefits for fine lines and firmness. The thing is, those are not a big concern at the moment so what I’m doing now is more preventative therefore may be more difficult to see “results” if you know what I mean. However, if you are into LED treatments, I would definitely think this is a very good investment. Usually LED treatments are around $99 per treatment time.

As for the skincare products, they were mediocre. I would say the Daily AHA Tonic and the Clarifying mask would be my pick to keep using, but the cleansing foam was nothing special. I used to love foaming cleansers like this, but now I feel that they can be quite stripping and drying on my skin so I prefer something more hydrating. The hyaluronic acid serum was just a little awkward to use and I pretty much always have another serum that provides hydration as well as something else – maybe niacinamide, brightening, peptides, etc. I seldom use a simple hyaluronic acid serum anymore because I want my serum to work more for me than just hydration.

For all the other bits and pieces that comes with the set, like the eyebrow shave and eyebrow precision, I simply use the shaver only and not really the precision because I don’t really have that much eyebrow hairs. I might give it away to be honest. Don’t really care about them.
