Murad Pure Skin Clarifying Dietary Supplement

Where I got it

If you have been following my Reformaskin journey on my blog, you should know that I am constantly battling with hormonal breakouts and acne scarring. Throughout the years I have been taking multivitamins, probiotics, collagen powders or pills and beauty protein (only recently) and they have helped with most of my breakouts. So I don’t get any breakouts on my cheeks, nose and forehead area. My main concern is chin and jawline (which can be easily hidden in photos with specific angles and a hand over my chin!)

Anyway, during a visit at Caci clinic, one of their nurse recommended me to take the Murad Pure Skin Clarifying Dietary supplement to help control my hormonal breakouts. So I did some research and got a bottle for $114. You can hardly get any discounts off Murad products unless you buy it overseas.

How I find it

You are supposed to take 2 tablets twice a day with food, so this bottle will last you 30 days. Hopefully by then my skin will improve and if it is under control, I will reduce to 2 tablets, once a day. The thing with hormonal breakouts, you probably can’t get rid of it unless you get your hormonal imbalance correct.

These tablets are huge! They have a dark brown/black colour and doesn’t really smell like anything. There is a big list of ingredients ranging from vitamins, minerals and extracts…

Main ingredients are: Vitamin A (retinol which you should not use while pregnant or breastfeeding, but this is an antioxidant that is great for cell turnover), Vitamin C (generally good for brightening of the skin and aid collagen production), Vitamin E (helps reduce appearance of scars), Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2 (riboflavin, helps to maintain the mucus secretion of the skin to prevent acne breakouts), Niacin (also known as Vitamin B3, to improve the condition of the skin), Vitamin B6 (is required by the body for the development of red blood cells), Biotin (Vitamin B7, commonly used in hair, skin and nail supplements), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5, important for our bodies to properly use carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and for healthy skin.), Calcium (help your body regulate cell turnover), Magnesium (reduce acne and other skin disorders by lowering cortisol levels, stabilizing hormonal imbalances, and improving cellular processes), Zinc (aids in healing the skin and prevents acne by regulating the activity of the oil glands), Selenium (neutralizes free radicals and other skin-damaging compounds before they can lead to wrinkles), Chromium, L-Lysine HCL (helps build collagen in the skin), L-Proline, Burdock 4:1 Root Extract (anti-inflammatory and antibacterial), Yellow Dock 4:1 Root Extract (anti-inflammatory), Horsetail 6:1 Shoot Extract (anti-inflammatory and antibacterial), Grape Seed Extract (Antioxidant).

I do see that it has 150mcg of Biotin in there and from previous experience, my skin does not do well with an excess amount of Biotin. By excess, what I mean is excess for my body. I’m not a doctor or a pharmacist, but basically, biotin and Vitamin B5 are absorbed via the same receptors within the body. When taking biotin supplements, the amount of biotin in the body is much more than the amount of vitamin B5, therefore there is a deficiency in vitamin B5. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) helps to regulate barrier function of the surface of the skin can reduce acne. Therefore an excess of biotin can cause breakouts.

Overall

I have finished taking an entire bottle of this and for the first 2 weeks I did see that my skin is clearing up, but things didn’t go as planned. I was testing out new skincare as well as doing some at-home microdermabrasion. I think I must’ve used something that my skin didn’t agree with and I had really flaky, dry skin around my mouth and chin and my neck were slightly peeling. My jaw area, even though feeling a bit dry, it was also breaking out after the 3rd week. I had red, surface breakouts as well as 1-2 under the skin breakouts. Also a number of white bumps under the skin as well.

After a few days of returning back to my normal skincare products, my skin felt so much better, but my breakouts took a little time to dry up. After that ordeal, it was my time of the month and that was really bad. Some months my skin is actually OK, but last month was pretty bad. After my period though, my skin healed pretty quickly and most of the under-the-skin bumps faded really fast and the active ones are easily dealt with using some Drying Lotion.

Overall, these supplements were not as amazing as expected, but they didn’t cause any side effects. I think it would be ideal to get 2 bottles and use it over 4 months to see lasting results and give some time for the body to get used to, but at this price, it would cost about $2 a day which is quite expensive in my opinion.
