NEW Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet shades for Spring 2023

Where I got it

On the first week of January, my Chanel beauty SA messaged me about this lovely gift with purchase offer on the new Rouge Allure Velvety lipstick shades for Spring 2023. I honestly had no idea that Chanel was launching new shades, let alone we are getting this beautiful black faux-leather case. When Julia sent me a photo from “The Little Red Book” of the gift, I was really excited and immediately placed my order with her. To get the lipstick you need purchase 4 of the Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks and she told me they only received 7 of these cases to offer to their clients, so they are very limited.

There were a total of 20 shades available in this collection, and from what I hear from the grapevines, 6 of these are existing shades that they are promoting for Spring, but the rest of the other 14 shades are new for Spring 2023.  There is also a price increase for these new lipstick shades. They used to be $66 each, but now they are $75 each which is a whopping $9 increase (13.6%!). When I told Julia the colours I want to purchase (at least you can choose the colours you want), she mentioned that one of the colours were an existing shade so she would charge me the old price of $66. So altogether, my order came to $291. She also gave me a couple of Sumblimage skincare samples as well as a Le Blanc La Base sample in Rosee (I’ve been wanting to try this!)

What I got

So I’ve picked up 4 Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks in the following shades: 43 La Favorite#, 51 Legendaire*, 63 Essentielle and 72 Mysterieuse*Luminous matte lipstick: this ultra-comfortable lip colour wears like a second skin and enhances lips with pure, concentrated pigments, for an intense and long-lasting luminous finish. A jojoba oil derivative and shea butter make for a soft formula that instantly leaves lips feeling moisturised and supple.

How I find it

Let’s talk about the beautiful gift with purchase lipstick case first because it is such a beautiful little thing. I have received the gift with purchase of Chanel lipsticks before but it was a glossy cardboard case that is nothing as nice as this. This is a proper case with a gold zipper. It holds 4 of the Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks or you can put whatever you want in it. It cannot fit a phone of course. I have seen online that you can convert this into a little crossbody mini bag. Pair it with a Chanel-looking chain, you have a Chanel mini bag!

Inside the case, the lining is red and there is a mirror on the underside of the top of the case. It actually looks smaller in real life than what I was expecting, but it’s one of the most useful gifts I’ve received from Chanel so far. Very happy with this but it also sucks because we have so limited quantities in New Zealand. I don’t think you can get this anymore in New Zealand. I also had DMs on Instagram from people in the US they have not seen this at all. Currently, I believe this is only available in Asia and possibly Australasia.

When I first picked out the colours, I did not know which ones were new and which ones were existing shades. I was given a photo of all the swatches from my SA showing all the colours they carry because sometimes Chanel in New Zealand does not carry all the shades we see overseas. I picked up two shades that I would really enjoy wearing on a day-to-day basis (51 and 63), a shade that is a bit of a pop of colour (43) and then I wanted something different and I went for the deepest shade (72).

I have previously owned one of the best-selling shades 58 – Rouge Vie which was in a limited edition case (red case) that I got probably 2 years ago. I liked the formula, but it isn’t something that I wear on a daily basis because they are truly pigmented lipsticks with a slightly matte finish. As per the description from Chanel, this gives a luminous matte finish, which I would not disagree with. However, the luminosity does not last and the longevity of the lipstick is around 3-4 hours before it starts to fade. To reapply, I would need to gauge how much it has faded and what kind of shade it was. If the fading was minimal and still looks quite OK, I would just reapply over the faded lipstick. If the lipstick has faded quite significantly and the colour is quite deep or bright, I would remove the existing colour and reapply fresh layers. I hate the feeling of layers of lipstick over dried lipstick if you know what I mean.

43 La Favorite is a bright coral-pink shade. This is not a shade that I usually reach for because I seldom wear bright colours in coral tones because it is a bit too bold. However, I wanted to give this a try and aim to wear this when I’m feeling a bit more fun. The pigmented lipstick formula gives good coverage so I really need to make sure it is applied neatly and evenly. I would say this is a shade I need to check regularly to see if it has faded weirdly.

43 La Favorite

51 Legendaire is a deep pinky-red with a brownish-orange undertone. When I saw this shade from the arm swatches my SA sent me, this one is a rather neutral shade compared to the rest of the shades available. It is in the 50s range, therefore less pinky and more red/orange tones which suits me more than the above. It turns out a little redder than I expected and I’m not mad about it. I love this shade. It’s probably not the most daily shade of lipstick, but I would definitely wear this to Church, to a lunch date, to a night out, etc.

51 Legendaire

63 Essentielle is the first colour I picked out because these red-bean paste shades are my favourite. Shades in the 60s range have beige undertones and are more muted. I could wear this sheer and blend it out with my fingertips for a casual look and apply full layers to get good coverage. This shade looks exactly like how it looks from the arm swatch and how I imagined it to be. Love it!

63 Essentielle

Finally, we have 72 Mysterieuse, which is the deepest shade available and it is one of two shades in the 70s range. This shade looks almost like a deep reddish brown in the bullet, but when applied, it gives this red wine colour. It is a gorgeous shade and I really don’t have many lipsticks like this. It clearly isn’t something I would wear on a daily basis and most probably only for night outs. I would definitely need to spend time applying this lipstick perfectly and maybe find a lip liner that matches to give this a perfect look.

72 Mysterieuse

Overall

I would say that these lipsticks do have a luminous look, but a semi-matte finish. Immediately upon application, the lipstick still retains that moisturised luminous look, but after about half an hour, it will set down to a more matte finish. It definitely is not a long-wear lipstick so it will rub off on your face mask, when you drink and when you eat. Therefore I would need to check and reapply as required. The lipsticks do leave a stain on the lips as they are highly pigmented, so even when they do wear off, it wouldn’t look that bad.

Overall, for $75 each, I wouldn’t say these lipsticks are amazing. I would admit that I bought 4 of these lipsticks because of the gift with purchase. The packaging of these lipsticks is beautiful – this click-open mechanism certainly gives this lipstick bullet a more luxurious vibe. The formula is very comfortable and has pigments, but I would say there are more affordable lipsticks out there that have a similar formula. For Chanel, I personally love their Rouge Coco Baume and Rouge Coco Bloom formulas most, but they are both more like tinted lip balms with a lot more moisture.

Would you purchase these lipsticks on their own or would you have purchased the lipsticks for the lipstick case gift?
