YSL Nu Bare Look Tint

Where I got it

I ordered this off of Selfridges after seeing it on IG sometime in June. I waited around mid-July for it to arrive in New Zealand but I was really eager to try it so I ordered it online. I picked up shade Nu 3 for USD$29.50. Available in 18 shades. I have not tried a YSL foundation for a few years now and nothing from them really appealed to me for the last few years except for their skincare and lipstick. This packaging of this skin tint looks quite different from the rest of YSL’s makeup products. The black and white packaging is minimalistic and even though it is not in a glass bottle, it doesn’t feel or look cheap. I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out with more products in this range – like a liquid blush or liquid bronzer, etc.

How I find it

This skin tint claims to provide light to medium, buildable coverage while providing a natural, radiant finish. Initially, when I tested this out on the back of my hands I thought oh no, I picked up a shade that is a little too light for me, but when I blend it out, it actually looked ok. Mostly because it has a sheer coverage so it is more forgiving if you have a shade lighter or deeper. After I’ve got the shade sorted out, it is time to look at the texture. When I tried it on my hand, it looked like a lightweight creamy skin tint and it doesn’t run down my hand. But when I blend it out with my fingers, I started feeling it getting watery. I would say I was a little taken aback to see how it blended out. It started getting into the lines on my hands, but it also turned watery on my hands. It felt really hydrating on the skin but at the same time, it seemed to sit on top of my skin instead of soaking in.

As you can see in the photo above, it comes out like a creamy blush, but when you blend it out, you can see in the photo below, that is settles into my lines and looks awfully patchy. I immediately knew that this skin tint would need a bit of navigating to see what is the best way to apply it.

After a bit of experimenting, I conclude that I like to apply this skin tint with my fingers and blend it out with my fingers. I squeeze out the product onto my fingertips and then blend it over my face in sections, then I move on to the next areas. I have to make sure I don’t use too much product because I have done that before and it really did not look good. The blending of the skin tint with fingers does mean that it will move it around the face a little bit before it settles down. You do get a bit of playtime with this product so if you do need more coverage, it is best to layer up after the first layer has set.

The coverage is sheer, but it looks pretty nice. Alternatively, I would like to apply this using a stippling brush so that it doesn’t get dragged around the face. I wouldn’t use a beauty sponge to apply because you will lose a lot of the coverage and it will get absorbed by the sponge.

Once the skin tint is relatively settled on my skin, I would apply my blush, highlighter, etc. as per normal. For days that I wear this skin tint, I like to wear a cream blush to keep that dewiness for the entire face. I would still use a translucent powder on my T-zone areas to help achieve better longevity. The skin tint isn’t long-wearing I would say, but it does last a good 4-5 hours if you don’t touch your face or wear a face mask. I wouldn’t say this is very hydrating or moisturising, so if you have dry skin, you will need to use a good moisturiser underneath this.

Above photos, I used one layer of skin tint (applied with fingers) and a light dusting of translucent powder over my forehead, nose, and chin area. I also used a cream blush on my cheeks and applied with a dense brush with a tapping motion. Then a subtle pressed highlighter on the high points of my cheekbones. I really like this look as it looks effortless and still looks presentable.

Overall

Similar to these skin tints popping up lately, these are sheer coverage and lightweight. This one is on the hydrating side and less oily/dewy. I have tried really thick, oil-based sort of serum foundations that are really not for my combination oily skin type. If you have oily skin, you may want to powder just a little bit. If you have dry skin, you may want to use a decent moisturiser to prep the skin. Do not expect good longevity, but it does wear off nicely instead of patchy.
