The Boxwalla Beauty Box – Perhaps the Butterflies are Real – June 2021

Where I got it

I am not a continuous subscriber to Boxwalla beauty boxes, but I have bought the last 2 boxes they offered because I really wanted to try the brands (Fifty7Kind and Nini Organics). This time, it has happened again. The moment I saw it was Lovinah, I was a little intrigued because I have tried one of their product before in a previous Boxwalla box (August 2020). It was a cleansing oil and I really enjoyed it. When I saw that the June box was 3 full-size Lovinah products including one new product, I got more interested. Boxwalla’s IG shows sneak peeks and the colours of the products just made the deal. Think deep blue, wine red and a shimmery bronze! The box is USD$49.95 plus USD$18.95 for shipping, and the retail value of this box is USD$160. It came down to NZD$97.66 for the entire order. I paid for the order on 9th May, it was shipped on 10th June and I received the box on 12th July.

The June Beauty Box is themed, ‘Perhaps the Butterflies are Real’ and features the extraordinary Lovinah Skincare. Joy Ekhator, the founder, draws inspiration from her native Nigeria, from her herbalist grandmother, and the African rituals she grew up with. How I find it

It turns out these products in the Boxwall box are all-new packaging. The gold jar and lid are a revamp on their old black jar and gold lid. I honestly think they did an amazing job, the overall packaging does look pretty luxe and expensive. Let’s get into the products. We will start with the Power Vitamin C Cleansing Balm. I have previously tried their Dragon’s Blood BHA Cleansing Oil (August 2020 Boxwalls Box) which has the same blood-red hue. It was a lovely product, but it did not last very long. This cleansing balm comes with a gold-coloured metal spatula to scoop the product and I am pleased to see the jar is filled to the brim with the balm. About a scoopful would be sufficient for the entire face. I use dry hands to melt the balm and then massage it onto my face with all my makeup on. I usually remove my eye makeup first with an eye makeup remover so I do not massage this over my eye area.

The cleansing balm melts gorgeously and smells like their Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Oil. I love it. It melts my makeup off and I like to give myself a good facial massage when I have time. Then I add some water to emulsify the oil and I massage a little bit more and then rinse off. The balm-to-oil rinses off easily and cleanly without leaving any oily residue. I love emulsifying cleansing oils and balms because I really can’t be bothered with a flannel or muslin cloth to wipe the product off and have the potential of leaving residue on my skin. Very nice cleanser, and so pleasant to use.

After cleansing, I use the Blue Butterfly Stem Cell Mask. This doesn’t come with a spatula, but I still pick the product up with a spatula to prevent spreading any germs onto the product. I like to apply this with a silicone brush so I don’t waste any product. The product looks almost pudding-like. When I pick up the product, you can see that it is quite thick. It appears to have some white specks in the vibrant blue-coloured mask. It applies in a typical clay-mask fashion where it is a little thick, but it is a smooth texture and it doesn’t dry up quickly so you have some time to spread.

The mask doesn’t dry down hard like a clay mask, but it does get dry to the touch in about 10 minutes. I rinsed it off after 10 minutes and it does need a bit of help to work it loose. I don’t notice a very immediate hydrating effect on the skin. Skin does feel soft, but not wow-ed by it. I will definitely try it a few more times, but I am glad that the blue colour washes off completely and does not stain my sink or face!

Even though we are in the depths of winter here down in New Zealand, it doesn’t stop me from being excited about the Goddess Glow Shimmering Body Oil. This shimmery body oil looked rather thick in the bottle, it needed a good shake to get the shimmery particles to mix with the oil base. It has a slightly golden/bronze glow in the bottle and when you pump it out. But when you smooth it all over the skin, the shimmery goodness does fade. The glow from the oil is beautiful and that would look great on the body.

However, if you plan to put on clothing, it is probably best to rub the body oil in and by doing that the shimmers will be dispersed along the skin. The shimmer is gentle, not light rubbing liquid highlighter on your skin, but I really do love the hydration and moisture on my body. After about an hour with clothing and rubbing around, all the shimmer kind of disappears, but the scent xxx

Overall

This box certainly looks and feels luxurious and the value is just amazing. You get 3 full-sized products in this box and they are filled to the brim! My favourite item in this box would have to be the Power Cleansing Balm. It is effective, it smells good and it melts beautifully on the skin. The Blue Butterfly Mask is also beautiful, but I would need to use this quite a few more times to see results I think. The blue colour is really fun, but it does have a scent that is quite interesting. Not weird, but not something I am familiar with and it is quite herbal-like. The Goddess Body Oil is nice, but since it is winter, I like to use just a moisturising body oil that doesn’t need much of a shimmer. Usually, if I want to use shimmery body oil, I would go for a dry oil that has more of a body highlighter look to it.
