The Whitening Co Teeth Whitening Experience

Little bit about my teeth…

I am an avid tea drinker. I have to admit that I’m addicted to jasmine green tea and matcha. I need to have at least one cup every day. My favourite would have to be Dilmah’s Excetional Jasmine Green Tea which is only available on their website and I order by the 50s box!

So over the years, my teeth are stained. I brush my teeth twice daily without fail, but I need to confess, I went nearly 8 years without a proper dental check or clean! Don’t freak out, I went for a dental clean recently and besides some built up plaque, my teeth were in great condition.

How I came across The Whitening Co…

Anyway, after that major clean, I thought my teeth needed a good course of whitening because of all that tea I’ve been drinking. So I’ve been looking at at-home whitening kits as well as in-clinic treatments. I came across many IG stories and posts on this new place called The Whitening Co in Mt Eden and I was very intrigued. I especially liked their at-home whitening tool which you can plug into your phone (neat). I decided to go for them because I’ve seen great reviews from heaps of other people and there were many influencers giving promo codes and vouchers.

They offer a couple of different treatment options ranging from $149 to $399. I opted for the Confidence package because this is my first time whitening and I’d like to get the best results in minimal time. I managed to get a discount voucher from one of the influencers I follow and it took $79 off my $229 package!

What was the treatment like…?

The booking online was a breeze and you had to pay 50% deposit upfront and pay the rest after the treatment. I arrived a little early on the day and I parked in the paid parking in the opposite side of the road. The clinic was nice and bright, it’s clean and chic. Ruby was there to greet me and asked me to fill out a quick questionnaire on the iPad while she attends to a patient and set up my spot.

Ruby was polite and professional, made sure to answer any of my questions and concerns. She explained the entire processes to me and told me where I can charge my phone, listen to my own music, etc. Apparently they have free Wifi too, but I wasn’t told.

Before

She put a bib on me and some protective eyewear from the UV light. Then in goes that plastic thing that opens up my mouth and Ruby used the shade chart to see what shade my teeth are before (top teeth are S20, bottom row is S24). Followed with cotton rolls around my gums to protect them. She then used a small syringe of gum protector (blue) around my gums and then placed the UV light over to let it harden. Then she proceeds to apply the whitening gel around my teeth and asked me to bite down as long as I can and preferably leave my tongue at the back without touching my teeth or the gel.

With gum protector and whitening gel applied

I can now sit back and play with my phone, check emails, browse Instagram, shop online, take selfies, etc. Just not talk on the phone. After about 25 mins, Ruby removes the first lot of gel and applied a new layer immediately. The next 25 minutes was a little tough because my jaw was getting tired and I’m getting a little bored.

Another 25 minutes go by, the machine switches off on a timer and Ruby came over to remove the gel, the gum protector and take off the plastic thing from my mouth. She asked me to rinse my mouth with mouthwash provided before swallowing anything. Besides my jaw being tired and my lips being dry, I had no sensitivity or discomfort at all.

I sat back down on the chair and she showed me the shade that my teeth are after the treatment! I was pleasantly surprised that both my upper and lower teeth both went 5 shades brighter! My top rows are now S10 and bottom rows are now S14. She did mention that this is my first time and my teeth can still get whiter, it is recommended to do a maintenance every 3-4 months or at-home treatment to maintain the brightness.

So this is the immediate results…

After!

Before: top teeth are S20, bottom row is S24. After: top teeth are S10, bottom row is S14.

Aftercare…

Ruby prepared a little paper bag for me with a syringe of desensitising gel, a whitening strip and a leaflet of aftercare instructions. I need to avoid any tea, coffee, tobacco or anything staining for at least 24hours for best results. Also any cold or hot drinks and food might cause sensitivity, so if I feel sensitive, just rub the desensitising gel to the teeth and it should subside.

Results after a month…

When I say I am an avid tea drinker, did I mention I’m literally addicted? 24 hours after the whitening session, I was onto my jasmine green tea again! I try to drink from a metal straw but that’s pretty much the only think I drink that stains my teeth. As you can see below, my teeth held up rather good! Obviously it’s not gonna get any shades whiter after the session, but it wasn’t like a 2 week thing and started to revert.

I’m sure I’m now supposed to keep up the effects with at-home teeth whitening kits. Any suggestions on which one to get? Should I get one from The Whitening Co.?
