Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer

Where I got it

I have the Sephora app on my phone and I check for new products regularly. A few weeks ago I saw new products from Fenty Beauty including new brow pencil, a hydrating primer and a hydrating foundation. The foundation didn’t really appeal to me but the primer did. I did a little bit of research between the mattifying and the hydrating primer and decided that the mattifying one would be more suitable for my skin type. My combination skin would benefit more with the mattifying one because if I need hydration, I would be able to achieve that with a good moisturiser.

So I ended up buying this one for $53 and I also picked up the Brow MVP which makes both of these my first ever Fenty Beauty products!

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer

What I got

This is the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer (30ml). A next-level mattifying primer for combination to oily skin that works instantly to deliver maximum all-day shine control while improving and extending foundation wear. Give combination to oily skin the matti’tude adjustment it’s always needed. With the same lightweight, cushiony texture that fans of the original Fenty Beauty primer know and love, Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer takes anti-shine to the next level, giving skin the ultimate fresh, clean slate for your Fenty Face. Instantly mattify skin, fight shine all day, and smooth the look of pores without feeling tight or dry.

Made with a unique blend of Blue Agave Extract and blurring powders—known for mattifying with a filter-like effect—this universal primer melts into all skin tones, leaving behind nothing but an instant soft-focus canvas that keeps your skin in the game all day.

How I find it

I was expecting this immediate super matte effect like the Becca EverMatte Primer, but this primer feels like a lotion to apply and it slowly dries down to a natural matte. It does contain dimethicone so it does blur pores and probably smooths out fine lines. I’m good with a bit of silicone, but it does cause breakouts for some people so beware.

I use 1 pump if I am just using it on my t-zone, and 2 pumps if I want to use it al over my face. I usually don’t really need to mattify my cheeks and jaw area because they can look and feel dry by the end of the day. I apply sunscreen underneath first, then once that is dried down, I apply this primer. I let this dry down as well which doesn’t take very long. It doesn’t dry down tight and looking super matte and my skin still feels comfortable and soft.

My liquid foundation goes on top easily without tugging or moving and I like to use a dense kabuki brush to apply. It depends on what foundation I use, I will mostly use a powder to set everything to help control shine. I do like a natural finish on my skin and a natural glow on my cheekbones, I don’t really like that full-coverage, matte look because it is very hard to maintain during the day for my skin type.

Overall

Like I mentioned before, this primer doesn’t give you this super matte look right on the application, but it does help balance the oily areas underneath the foundation. It helps keep the oil down and keeps the foundation from moving around.

I do like to use it because it does balance my skin and smooth it out for foundation application. The scent is quite mild and it does fade out so it doesn’t bother me a lot. A combination with a natural finish foundation and a mattifying powder does help prolong the foundation wear. I might try the hydrating primer next.
