Dermalogica Precleanse Balm

Where I got it: I was recently invited to the launch of this Dermalogica product and this came in the goodie bag we each took home. This will be available from all Dermalogica counters and www.demalogica.co.nz from 8th September for $75.00.

What I got: This is a 90ml tube of the Dermalogica Precleanse Balm. The balm is ideal for normal to dry skin due to two very nourishing key ingredients, a natural Biolipid Complex and Apricot Kernel Oil. The balm is great for travelling and in makeup artists kits, as it will not leak. The skin accumulates quite a bit of “dirt” on a daily basis, which forms a thick, slick, waxy coating on the skin by the middle of the day. Four aspects that make up this ‘dirt’ are sunscreen, pollution, makeup and excess sebum (oil). Despite all of this build-up, most people still only spend about 20 seconds washing their faces – much less than the time they spend doing hair or make-up. Those 20 seconds with standard face washes or make-up removal wipes are not enough to penetrate the layer of sebum, pollutants and cosmetic debris that coat the skin’s surface. In most cases, that layer remains on the skin, preventing moisturisers and other skin care products from doing their work while dulling the skin’s appearance and contributing to congestion. “Step zero” is the first step in the daily cleanse to take the skin back to zero, with zero make-up, zero residue, and zero irritation.

How I find it: Designed to be Step 0 in the skincare routine, this is the first step of the double cleanse. I am a true believer and practitioner of the double cleanse for years now, even if I’m wearing sunscreen and no foundation. To use this, I make sure my hands or mitt is dry squeeze about a 1-1.5cm long product onto the mitt (small bristle side). Initially, the balm is pretty stiff and hard to squeeze out, but I think that also depends on the surrounding room temperature as well. Then I massage the mitt all over my face including my eye area to remove eye makeup. The small bristle side is really gently and soft but it still works great to remove makeup. Then I use a bit of water on the mitt and emulsify the balm and then I rinse it all off with the help of the mitt as well. Then I use my usual cleanser to complete my double cleansing.

Overall: I love the Precleanse oil already so when they launched the Precleanse balm, I knew I would love it too. I have combination oily skin and it gets a bit dry during winter, but I still found the balm did an awesome clean. If you have used the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm before, this is very similar, only in a tube form which is actually more hygienic to use and to take travelling. I love using a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm because I can massage it on and pop in the shower and rinse it off in the shower. It can also remove waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and long-wearing makeup. It’s just super efficient, effective and time-saving. Another thing I love is how it comes with a double-sided silicone mitt for cleansing and you can use this with another balm product or even with your cleanser to create amazing lather. Fabulous!
